Why it matters more than you think
When someone searches “dentist near me” or “bakery in Erode”, the first thing they see is usually a map with three businesses — not a list of websites. Many customers call, get directions or book from that card without ever opening your site.
Google says local ranking depends on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance, and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You can’t move your shop, but the other two are largely in your hands.
Set it up properly
- Your real business name — no extra keywords like “Best Dental Clinic Erode”, which can get you suspended
- The most specific primary category, plus a few relevant secondary ones
- Exact address and a map pin that lands on your entrance
- Phone number that is answered, and accurate opening hours including holidays
- Every service or product you offer, with short descriptions
- A link to your website, and to a booking or ordering page
- Verification completed — often by a short video of your premises and signage
Photos that build trust
- The outside, so people recognise you when they arrive.
- The inside, clean and well lit.
- Your team at work — real people beat stock photos.
- Your products or results, with permission where customers appear.
Add new photos every few weeks. A profile that looks alive suggests a business that is.
Reviews: the part that moves the needle
- 01
Ask at the right moment
Right after a good experience — when the customer thanks you, or when an order is delivered.
- 02
Make it one tap
Share your review link on WhatsApp, on the receipt, and as a QR code at the counter.
- 03
Reply to every review
Thank people by name. For complaints, apologise, stay factual and offer to sort it out offline.
- 04
Never buy or fake reviews
Google removes them and can restrict your profile. Offering discounts in exchange for reviews is also against the rules.
Turn views into bookings
Google Business Profile lets many businesses add a booking or ordering link. Point it to a page where people can actually act — choose a time, place an order, request a quote — not just your home page.
The page has to be fast and simple on a phone, because that’s where almost all of these visitors are. Our guides on online ordering for restaurants and booking for clinics show what works.
Keep it active
- Post updates — offers, new services, events — every week or two.
- Keep hours accurate, especially on festivals and holidays. Nothing loses trust faster than a closed door.
- Check your listing monthly. Anyone can suggest edits, and some get applied automatically.
- Match your details everywhere. The same name, address and phone on your website, social pages and directories.
Your website still matters — it’s where people go to compare and decide. If it isn’t pulling its weight, see how much a website costs in India and what you get at each level.
Questions people ask
- Is Google Business Profile free?
- Yes. Creating and managing the profile is free. Google sells ads that can appear on Maps, but they are optional.
- Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
- Common reasons are keywords added to the business name, an address that doesn’t match a real location customers can visit, or several profiles for one business. Fix the issue, then request reinstatement with proof such as a utility bill or shop photos.
- Can I have a profile without a shop?
- Yes, as a service-area business — for example, a plumber or a home tutor — you can hide your address and list the areas you serve instead.
- How long until my profile ranks higher?
- Changes to details apply quickly, but rankings move gradually as reviews, photos and activity build up. Expect weeks to months, not days.
